Furthermore, this paper reflects on the scientific and critical criteria of such concepts as authenticity and their genderbiased applications to male and female diaristic texts. Within the reception of the published work, national reception similarly appears at play. In stark contrast, German historians continue to attack the status of the diary. Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Intensifying from onwards, the air war was aimed not least at the civilian population, among which women formed a majority, resulting in a notably higher death rate among them. The female war experience is also reflected in diary writing, taken up by women in large numbers from This holds particularly true for research in literary studies. When, inVolker Hage edited an anthology intending to prove that the experience of the air war was far from being a taboo — as stated by W. Sebald and Jörg Friedrich — he included only one text by a female writer: Monika Maron. But diaries, no matter by whom they are written, still pose difficult questions to both historical and literary disciplines. Ego-documents like journals, letters, and autobiographies merge factual and literary elements and belong to the somewhat dubious breed of the autobiographical genre, simultaneously situated in history and literature. Their hybrid character, however, is rarely appreciated. While historians tend to see ego-documents as factual accounts that may only become marred by the usage of literary techniques, such as narratives and tropes, literary studies, on the other hand, recognizes these features, but tends to be more willing to laud diaries for their content or style when they are penned by well-known authors. Literary studies, on the other hand, acknowledges that revisions of texts usually bring about improvement. Although this outline may overstate the differences, it aims to help understand why some diaries do not fit well into established patterns of scholarly perception. This paper will focus on a war diary that has experienced all the problems of diary reception in an exemplary way: the literary journal of Marta Hillers. SENSITIVE TOPICS, SENSITIVE RECEPTION —a journalist who witnessed the end of the war in Berlin, as well as the advent of the Red Army occupation and subsequent mass rapes. The diary experienced a contrasting reception upon publication of its two German editions. While it went mostly unnoticed in its first edition init became a bestseller after its re-issue. The diary is notable for the variety of reasons for which it has become disputed in Germany, from its first publication until today. Two aspects greatly contributed to the dubious status the diary continues to hold, at least among historians: first, its anonymity, and second, an almost year-long refusal by the literary executors to grant access to the manuscripts. Since general access was only granted in mid, up to the present day only one historical study has been carried out on the basis of the manuscripts and the transcript. This has severe consequences, since authenticity, although never explicitly defined, but implicitly understood as minimal differences between first draft and publication, becomes the main criterion against which the text is measured. On the other hand, when perceived dating american soldiers in germany a literary diary, text revisions appear as a standard part of the writing process. As the original manuscripts are now accessible, I will also analyze the degree to which the printed version is faithful to its manuscript predecessors or not. Rather, the diary focuses on the encounters with the Russians from an almost ethnological viewpoint. As such, it will be studied for its patterns of perception, the influence exerted on it by Spenglerian thought, and its elements of travel writing.
The same idea was advocated in the American Morgenthau plan, which envisioned the radical destruction of German economic and political infrastructure, turning the country into an agrarian state after the war.
